Need A Cozy Christmas Read?

The holidays are here, and I'm already dreaming of puzzles on the dining table, carols around the fire and mulled wine.

I'm also thinking about what reading I might have time for during this busy season--in between performances, parades, and parties--I am over the moon that we can host our annual holiday open house again! In light of that, I thought I'd share a couple favorite reads of mine that are perfect for a winter's evening after the events of the day have calmed down.

The first is an obvious classic, but also a story that can get lost amongst the myriad of film and TV versions. If you've never read it, I warmly recommend that you pick up Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol this year. Here's one of my favorite quotes:

“He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old world.”

I'd also like to suggest The Wilder Muir by John Muir, naturalist and "Father of the National Parks." Muir wrote about his adventures and explorations during the 19th century, but over a hundred years later, you can almost hear the birdsong and feel the wind on your face as you read this collection of edited essays. Perfect for a quiet morning in your comfy reading chair, while looking out at the frost on the lawn and the lingering mist in the trees. Here's a quote of his that I love:

"To my father who was solicitous lest the devil should misguide my steps, I once wrote, 'Father, don’t trouble yourself about the devil so far as I am concerned. The devil never gets above the timber-line'."
